Chinese Shop Owner Laced Noodles with Opium

The owner of a Chinese shop admitted to the Xi’an Evening News that he had in fact laced noodle dishes from his restaurant with opium in an effort to get customers “addicted” to his food, which in turn would encourage them to come back for more.
It was only after a customer who had eaten at the shop in the Shaanxi province of China got pulled over by police for a traffic violation that the problem was discovered. As part of the stop, Liu Juyou was mandated to complete a routine drug test, which ultimately tested positive for opium.
For 15 days, 26-year-old Juyou was detained on charges of drug abuse, all the while declaring innocence. However, after urging family members and friends to try the noodles with opium at the same shop and then get drug tested was he released from custody. The outcome for every person who ate at the noodle shop was the same – positive for drugs.
The owner, referred to only as Zhang, finally admitted that he had purchased 4.4 pounds of poppy buds last August for just under $100, buds that contained the addictive seeds. According to a report by Hua Shang Bao, after crushing the seeds into fine powder, Zhang added the substance, as well as Chinese seasoning to the noodles to improve taste but to also improve business.
As stated by local law enforcement officials, the unprocessed seeds contain a high enough level of opiates to gradually build up within the body. As a certain level, a positive drug test is triggered. News reporters added that putting poppy seeds in hot sauce was at one time a relatively common practice in China but this has since been legally banned.
