Oregano Recalled For Possible Salmonella Contamination

Herbs and spice seller McCormick & Company, whose products are sold nationwide, recalled 1,032 McCormick Ground Oregano cases due to the herb possibly being contaminated with salmonella. The recalled oregano was shipped to different grocers and other outlets in 41 states, according to the news release by the U.S. FDA.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an advisory on the recalled oregano Friday.
The recall was voluntary by McCormick, which is based in Maryland, affecting only dried Oregano sold in containers of 0.75-ounce with UPC code 0-523561-6 and with an expiration date that says “Best by August 21 16 H” or “August 22 16 H”. The oregano recall does not affect any other McCormick oregano products to include leaves, whole or ground, according to the company.
The possible risk was brought to the attention of McCormick’s by the U.S. FDA during a round of routine testing, said the federal regulatory agency on Friday but to date, there have been no illnesses reported in connection with the recalled product.
Healthy people who become infected with Salmonella often have symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. However, Salmonella can create a serious, and at times, fatal infection in the elderly, young children, and others whose immune systems are weakened, said officials from the FDA.
McCormick alerted its customers as well as grocery outlets to take the product from the shelves in the affected areas. The product will be destroyed in a manner that prevents any possible consumption, said federal officials. In addition, consumers have been advised not to return the oregano bottles to the store but rather dispose of both content and container.
The FDA did not release any information as to how many cases or bottles were still unsold or still in retailer’s warehouses.
