Diets With Low Salt Content Linked to Health Hazards

Salt intake quantity has been a topic of debate for a long time.  While some doctors believe less intake of salt is beneficial for a person’s body, others have contradicted those conclusions.

The debate seems to have ended based on a study undertaken in a very comprehensive manner. This study suggested that cutting back too much on sodium intake could actually do serious damage to a person’s body. As such, a number of trusted agencies have developed guidelines for the optimal intake of sodium needed by a human being.

Currently, Americans have an intake of sodium around 3.400 milligrams but according to The World Health Organization, American Heart Organization and various other United States agencies, this level should be much less, between 1,500-2,300 milligrams.

However, one particular study involving more than 100,000 people from over 17 countries was conducted over a three-year period. This study suggested people with sodium intake of less than 3,000 milligrams per day were at a greater risk of having a heart attack or even death than people whose intake over the same timeframe was between 3,000 milligrams to 6,000 milligrams per day. However, if sodium intake exceeded 6,000 milligrams a day, the same risk of stroke or death existed.

This report was published in New England Journal of Medicine, targeting people whose sodium intake is less as a way of helping them realize the magnitude of risk associated with low sodium intake. The study basically focused on the link between low sodium and cardiovascular diseases but in 2013, a different report was published by the Institute of Medicine (Advisor to Congress on Health Issues), which went against various claims of there being no evidence to support the theory of cutting sodium intake below 2,300 milligrams and reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.
