Ultrasound Used For Destroying Tumor In Brain

In a new study researchers have used ultrasound to destroy the cancerous tissue in brain. This is the first time such technique has been used successfully.

The procedure was performed by researchers in Zurich, Switzerland, to assess the feasibility and safety of the person. The recurrent giloma tumor was in patient’s intact skull. With the help of InSightec’s Exablate Neuro system the tumor was destroyed.

In the method of such focused ultrasound thousands of its beams are employed to converge on a spot and deep in the body.

The treatment of the patient was done at the Focused Ultrasound Center of University Children’s Hospital Zurich and it was led by Javier Fandino, M.D. He is a professor of Neurocardiology at Kantonsspital Aarau, Switzerland. He was well assisted by Ernst Martin, M.D., He is a professor of Neuroradiology, University Children’s Hospital Zurich.
