The age old saying ‘Health is Wealth’, is so true. We all struggle to keep ourselves fit as a fiddle.

Today’s world afflicted with lifestyle diseases and unhealthy eating schedules we all look for recipes to stay healthy and fit. In an overwhelming study conducted on eating habits of 65,000 people in Britain for a period of around 8 years, the secret is revealed. The data from Health Survey of England, was published in Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, where the findings suggest that people who eat around 6-7 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables daily reduce their risk to mortality by 42%.


During this study the intake or servings of fruits and vegetables among different participants were noted and compared with mortality rate. People who consumed 1-3 servings of vegetables were found to reduce their risk by 14%, eating 3-5 portions reduces risk by 29% and 5-7 servings which is considered ideal is associated with lowering death risk by 35%. To this Dr. Oyinlola Oyebode, researcher from the Epidemiology and Public Health at University College adds “We all know that eating fruit and vegetables is healthy, but the size of the effect is staggering.”

Fruits and vegetables have an influence in reducing risk to cancer and heart diseases by 25% and 31% respectively. Consumption of fruits and vegetables is found to be linked with the BMI (Body Mass Index) and also maintains body weight. Women who restricted smoking and alcohol intake along with eating healthy and ample servings of vegetables decreased their death rate by 16% and fruits were found to reduce it by 10%.

Fresh vegetables are found to be healthier than canned and sweetened ones. The amount of consumption is seen to have propounding effects. It is important we make smart choices for our meals by increasing daily consumption of fruits and vegetables for overall health benefits.
