Study Says That Vegetarians Are Not As Healthy As Meat Eaters!

A controversial study has concluded that vegetarians are less healthy than meat-eaters. Although vegetarians who tend to drink less, smoke less and are physically more active, have lower body mass indexes, they end up less healthy and happy than meat eaters.

The study was conducted by the Medical University of Graz in Austria using data from the Austrian Health Interview Survey to inspect the dietary habits and lifestyle differences between meat-eaters and vegetarians. The study found that people having a vegetarian diet of fruits, vegetables and whole-grain foods; appear to suffer from high risks of allergies, cancer and mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. It was also discovered that vegetarians were twice as likely to have allergies and a 50 percent increase in heart attacks and cancer.

The study included 1320 subjects of which 330 were vegetarians, 330 ate meat but mostly ate fruits and vegetables, 300 were normal eaters who ate less meat and 330 who ate lots of meat. It found that vegetarians consumed less alcohol, but were still in a poorer state of physical and mental health overall. The study concluded that Austrian adults who consume a vegetarian diet have a lower quality of life, are less healthy and also call for more medical treatment.

Study coordinator and epidemiologist Nathalie Burkert said that they found that vegetarians suffer more from conditions like mental illnesses, asthma and cancer than people that eat meat as well. But he also specified that the reason for these results were not known. He added that further study should be done before knowing the exact explanations.

While many studies in the past have stressed on the health risks associated with red meat and carnivorous diets, this study has an altogether new view point. But, the researchers have declared that further studies will be needed to validate some facts offered in this current research.
