Stem Cell Work of Riken Been Questioned – Lead Researcher Accused of False Data!

The recent event of discrepancy in stem cell research in Japan has shaken the scientific community worldwide. Riken Center for Development Biology located in western Japan, Kobe has been criticized for their recent publication in Nature, published in January this year. The scientists have claimed to re program me adult mouse cells to their embryonic state which promises to generate tissues for the treatment of many life threatening diseases. Stem cell therapies have been practiced for more than a decade now to evade complications related to transplantations as well as a permanent cure for diseases like in born diabetes, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and more. It is however under research throughout the globe with scientific communities trying to overcome hurdles and head towards ground breaking research.

Haruko Obokata, who has received unanimous fame for the past couple of months for her research on stimulus-triggered acquisition of pluripotency cells or STAP cells, has denied the fabrication charges. She has expressed shock and claimed that there were no alterations in the DNA images which were put forth in her paper. The scientists from Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in the United States have not been able differentiate cells, according to the paper published in Nature and that made them challenge her work.

Dr. Ryoji Noyori, Riken president and spokes person has condemned the act in a press committee and stated, “I would like to apologize afresh that articles Riken researchers published have damaged the credibility of the scientific community.” The three co authors are also under the spot light and though they have proven not to represent false data, their intentions are questioned for participating in publishing without reviewing the work.

No further comments were released from Riken. In the light of these events further reviews are to be held. This incident has made us think that it is the responsibility of the scientific community not to mislead research as playing with medical science is a criminal offense of its kind.
