A Japanese research institute blamed its own stem cell scientist for misconduct. The alleged scientist made an apology on Wednesday for all the mistakes that he carelessly committed and stressed upon the point that the STAP cells she made, were in fact, real!

Haruko Obokata informed reporters in a news conference about how she “produced the STAP cells successfully more than 200 times, and this is the truth” as per a Japanese newspaper, Yomiuri Shimbun.

These cells are formally termed stimulus-triggered acquisition of pluripotency cells. The description lies in 2 different studies that were published in the month of January in Nature, a journal. The purport in the study mentioned that there can be a head-on method for creating embryonic kind, flexible stem cells that can possibly develop into any kind of cell in the body.

Apart from this, the tissue that can be developed from STAP cells can be matched genetically to the patients so that they will face no risks in terms of being rejected by the immunity system.

These studies were perceived as a milestone but within a short period of time, sceptics came up with their own set of doubts regarding the transformation of stem cells by just leaving them soaked within an acid bath for only 30 minutes.

These doubts paved way for allegations that certain images that were part of the study were taken from various other papers and that the study contained plagiarized text as well. Adding salt to the wound, many of the research labs that tried a hand at replicating these results came out successful.

She said in her statement of apology – “There was no deceptive motive in my completing these articles,” and added -, “If anyone wants to watch me create STAP cells, I’ll go anywhere.”

She also stressed upon the fact that other researchers can get same results too.
