Now Shed Those Virtual Pounds With An App!

Selfies have not just gotten popular but have become something of a cult. The word itself was recently accepted by the Oxford English Dictionary because of the frequency of its use. There are loads of photo editing apps that will enhance your selfies so that you can share them on social networking sites. But this is the first of its kind app that helps you shed those virtual pounds from your selfie before you upload it.

SkinneePix, an app that is available at the Apple and Android stores can now help you shed anywhere between 2 to 7 kgs of fat from your photographs so that you look slimmer. “Cameras add additional weight to photos and when you’re taking a selfie you’re also dealing with bad lighting, angles, close-ups and a lot of other factors that make people complain that the photo isn’t an accurate representation of themselves,” said Susan Green, co-founder of the company Pretty Smart Women that created the app.

The app was originally developed to help motivate overweight individuals to lose weight by seeing a slimmer version of themselves says Robin J. Phillips, the other co-founder. “It’s a good reminder to get off the couch, turn the TV off, and go for a walk,” she said.

Being priced at $0.99, the app only works on single head shots. But the main concern here is the message it sends out to young people about their body-image and being comfortable in their skin. Lauren Dickson, a social worker in the eating disorders and addiction clinic at the Centre of Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto, Canada, expressed concerns saying that this could add to eating disorder in young people. “The media obviously has some effect on people developing eating disorders, but it’s not the only variable. It’s one of many factors,” she said
