Ketamine Being Used To Treat Depression

Depression

Depression is an illness that inflicts itself upon more people than you would think on a yearly basis, there might even be somebody that you know whom is affected by the symptoms of depression. The illegal drug that has made a name for itself in the underground party circuit seems like it may be the answer to all of the depression patients problems, that drug is known as Ketamine. There are patients who are facing depression on a daily basis, and have been for years upon years with no foreseeable cure; but it seems as if their symptoms had disappeared nearly hours after using the drug.

The trial was relatively small, as it only consisted of 28 people, but the results were staggering. It was reported in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, and it shows the benefits of Ketamine lasting over a period of months. Experts on the matter have stated that these findings open up a whole new branch regarding research.

When people are using antidepressants like Prozac, or even behavioural therapies, they can see some results. Although that’s the case, some patients don’t really see a difference when they use these forms of therapy, so they find themselves stuck in a place where they don’t want to be. The team at Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust that looked into this process have patients their own doses of Ketamine within a 40 minute time period, on six separate occasions.

The lead researcher of the study Dr. Rupert McShane had this to say regarding the trials: “It really is dramatic for some people, it’s sort of thing that really makes it worth doing psychiatry, it’s a really wonderful thing to see.” Even though the drug has a rather ruthless reputation on the streets, it seems as if Ketamine has certain benefits that may be for the greater good after all.

The study was funded by National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Research for Patient Benefit Programme.
