Keep Dementia and Mild Cognitive Impact on Issues with Regular Aerobic Exercises

Aerobic Exercises

A recent study has revealed that older women when they do regular aerobic workouts reduce or slows down the progression of dementia. The study justifies that, the size of the brain’s memory area is increased due to the activity which works in favor.

Aerobic Exercises

This study was conducted in a small group of 86 women who aged between 70 and 80 who had mild memory problems. According to the doctors, this is termed as Mild Cognitive Impairment which is a risk factor for dementia. All these women took MRI scans to check the size of hippocampus, which is responsible for memory at the start of the study period.

The Physical Therapy Department of University of British Columbia in Vancouver conducted this study under the team Teresa Liu-Ambrose and a few other physical therapists and published the news release on British Journal of sports magazine online.

During the study period, according to the report, the women had to undergo an hour long session of aerobic or lunges and squats, resistance training, muscle toning exercise or balancing exercise. After a period of 6 months, 29 women who underwent program took another MRI scan to check the size of hippocampus. Significant enlargement of the hippocampus was seen in women who had completed the full 6 months training and there was no change in those who did not undergo these exercises as per the report.

Authors of this study added that linking the mental abilities with the brain volume is a very complex work, and it requires more research. Further, the researchers also reported that increase in size of hippocampus could have been also due to the poorer verbal memory. However, cause and effect relationship between the aerobic exercise and size of hippocampus, is yet to be established.

However, this is proof enough to show that doing aerobic exercises reduces or slows down the shrinkage of hippocampus, specifically in women who have a risk of developing dementia. Regular aerobic exercise is recommended by these researchers to women who have Mild Cognitive Impairment issues. With dementia being a worldwide phenomena one person is diagnosed every 4 seconds to have this condition and by the year 2050 it is expected that over 115 million people will have this.
