Drive To Focus On Eating Disorders That Affect Both Genders!

Eating Disorders

It is our natural tendency to relate eating disorders to women. Studies prove otherwise. Around 10 to 15% of American men are estimated to suffer from eating disorders, shows the data from the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD). Though eating problems like bulimia and anorexia nervosa are more common in women, eating disorders in men are equally high. The researchers from University of Oxford, UK believe that men lack recognition in this front and so, the incidences are higher due to lack of early diagnosis.

In a recent study which was published in BMJ Open, a group of 39 people were been interviewed. 10 out of which were men. The participants were between16 to 25 years of age. They were surveyed on four keys objectives. Their understanding of the disorder, second the recognition of the problem, third their eagerness to get help and lastly their experience with health professional and care givers. What came up with this survey was there is lack of diagnosis and under research for eating disorders. The participants did not take it seriously even after some of them showed symptoms like vomiting, nausea, overeating and even mood swings. More to add, their crisis was also not addressed effectively, as there is still awareness to be gained among clinicians about eating disorders and how fatal can they be. There is a thin line between the clinical disorder and psychological problems which needs careful analysis.

The Brighton and Hove Eating Disorder service (BHEDS) has also conducted similar surveys among men, women and care givers. There is a gap between diagnosis of eating disorders and understanding by the health officials to facilitate treatment. Eating disorders affects around 1.6 million population including young women, teenagers and men. Increased awareness among men and women are equally required before they turn into life threatening disorders.
