Autism in Males Linked To Use of SSRI during Pregnancy

It seems as if the effects of medications could have resulted in your son being born with autism, but the medicines listed are probably going to shock you. Not only did depression medication (as well as anxiety medication) have a pivotal effect on the pregnancy process, but it seems as if it plays an integral role regarding your child’s mental health. When you take these medications you’re actually putting the risk of your off-spring suffering from autism sky-high, which isn’t necessarily a good thing.

This information is coming on the heels of a study which was published in Pediatrics. SSRI’s (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) are the most common staple when it comes to the management of depression. These are used to minimalize the effects of not only moderate depression, but severe depression as well (they are the common choice because they don’t pose as many side effects as other medicines). Although this medicine is particularly useful when it comes to the management of depression, it may have a role in the development of autism during pregnancy.

Researchers used data compiled from the Childhood Autism Risks from Genetics and the Environment study, have stated that taking these particular drugs may result in mental health issues (if they are taken during pregnancy, that is). The drug has officially been linked to higher reports of ASD (autism spectrum disorder), as well as DD (development delays) in males specifically.

Although the study had certain limitations imposed upon in, the results are still informative and will probably pose for a movement to be made regarding the issue. “This study provides further evidence that in some children, prenatal exposure to SSRIs may influence their risk for developing an autism spectrum disorder,” stated Professor Hetz-Picciotto.
