Thirty-nine year old Joanne Milne, from Gateshead, England, has been deaf all her life, and began losing her eyesight during her 20s. She was diagnosed with a rare condition called Usher syndrome. It’s a rare genetic disorder that causes hearing loss and along with it visual impairment. It is one of the leading causes of deafblindness.

Recently Joanne was fitted with a pair of cochlear implants. These are medical devices that electronically push the auditory nerve in the inner ear. Even though these devices cannot fully restore a person’s hearing they have help provide individuals with a sense of sound.

In a touching video, taken after surgery by her friend Tremayne Crossley, we see how Joanne responds to hearing for the first time. She bursts into tears as she hears the nurse read out the days of the week to her.

“The switch-on was the most emotional and overwhelming experience of my life, and I’m still in shock now,” Milne told BBC News. “The first day everybody sounded robotic, and I have to learn to recognize what these sounds are as I build a sound library in my brain.”

She exclaimed she was overjoyed by the results of these implants and they were definitely ‘life-changing’. She recalls, “The first day everybody sounded robotic and I have to learn to recognize what these sounds are as I build a sound library in my brain. Hearing things for the first time is so, so emotional, from the ping of a light switch to running water. I can’t stop crying.”

Milne works for a charity called Sense and seems overwhelmed by all the sounds around her. She graciously thanked the team at the Midlands Implant Centre at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, who were responsible for her surgical implants.
