Lower Backaches Are a Major Cause for Job Disability

Lower Backaches Are a Major Cause for Job DisabilityIn a study by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) it was found that lower back aches were the number one cause for job disability around the world. The study also revealed that American’s spend about $50 billion a year on lower backaches.

The study published in the Annals of Rheumatic Diseases. Data was gathered from round 117 different kinds of research materials and other supplements that involved around forty-seven different countries. Lower backaches were said to be the leading cause for the number of years lost out on. This conclusion was reached when they calculated the number of years the person either lived on disability or how early a death was due to this.

It comes as no shock that one in every 10 people suffer from some sort of backache or the other. The numbers were higher in Western parts of Europe and the lowest in the Caribbean and Latin America. With the rise in the numbers of people who are older, this means that more and more people are bearing that pain for a longer period of time.

Lower back aches come with their fair share of problems like loss of productivity and medication costs. The known and most common practices of treating a chronic backache is ice pack applications, heat application, standard pain medication or in some adverse cases, surgery. Some people prefer to try alternative methods like acupuncture massages or even more rigorous methods of medication like opioids. Being inactive is one of the leading causes of backaches, so many people try getting some exercise.

With backaches being so common and though to be harmless, people are not giving it the attention it deserves. “Governments, health service and research providers and donors need to pay far greater attention to the burden that low back pain causes than what they had done previously,” the authors write.
